Emotional Triggers and Pressure
Emotions are the steering wheel
Criminals steer with emotion because a strong feeling makes careful thought harder. Recognising the feeling is the first step to resisting it.
Common triggers
- Fear of losing money, access, or safety.
- Hope of a windfall, a relationship, or a fresh start.
- Guilt or the wish to be helpful.
- Curiosity about a message or attachment.
- Embarrassment, which stops people reporting early.
How pressure is applied
Pressure is usually a deadline, a threat, or a demand for secrecy. Any of these is a signal to stop, not to hurry. A legitimate organisation will not punish you for taking time to check.
Scenario
A message says your account will be closed in one hour unless you confirm your details. The clock is the manipulation. In reality, a genuine provider can confirm its request through official channels at any time.
| Trigger | What it sounds like | Your counter-move |
|---|---|---|
| Fear | Act now or lose access | Verify independently |
| Hope | You have been selected | Ask why you, and check |
| Guilt | I need your help urgently | Offer help that is safe |
| Secrecy | Do not tell anyone | Tell someone you trust |
Build a pause
Decide in advance that you will never make a significant decision while you feel rushed. That single rule defeats a large share of attempts.
