Why Scams Work
Deception targets decisions, not intelligence
Anyone can be targeted, and being targeted is not a sign of being foolish. Scams are engineered to work on ordinary human instincts under pressure.
The three ingredients
Most successful deceptions combine three ingredients:
- A believable story. It fits something you are already expecting, such as a delivery, a bill, or a message from your bank.
- An emotional push. Fear, hope, or curiosity narrows your attention.
- A simple next action. You are asked to do one small thing that feels reasonable in the moment.
A short scenario
You are expecting a parcel. A message arrives saying a small redelivery fee is due. The story matches your expectation, the fee is tiny, and the action is one tap. Nothing feels dramatic, which is exactly why it works.
| Feeling | What it does | A steady response |
|---|---|---|
| Urgency | Rushes the decision | Pause for ten minutes |
| Authority | Reduces questioning | Verify independently |
| Hope | Lowers caution | Ask what could go wrong |
| Secrecy | Stops you checking | Tell a trusted person |
The one habit that helps most
Slow down and verify through a channel you chose yourself. Almost every defence in this course comes back to that single habit.
